Coshocton Public Library - Large Meeting Room

Asylums are a setting of intrigue for many with their deep historical bases, their sometimes controversial treatments, and their chilling stories. The Athens Lunatic Asylum housed plenty of stories and history for all to delve into and take a new piece of information every time. Join Mindy McGinnis as she discusses treatments such as electroshock therapy and the infamous lobotomy procedures that took place in Athens, and dives into a twisted and fascinating history of the misconceptions of procedures and beliefs of the past, the location and its status of the time, and the struggle of women in the 1800s seeking help. This program is hosted by the Friends of the Coshocton Public Library in partnership with the Ohio Humanities Speakers Bureau and the Coshocton Public Library.
