What is a book talk? It’s a very short (less than 2 minute) speech designed to spark interest in a book. A book talk is not a book summary, but rather provides a quick overview of the main plot, characters, or themes without giving away the ending. A book talk should flow like a persuasive presentation that leaves people wanting to read the book.
4 parts
- Hook the audience – Give the title and author. Read a quote, ask a question, introduce the main character, or set the scene.
- Brief summary – One short paragraph introducing main topic/character, identifying the problem, and hinting towards the solution without giving away the ending. Leave the audience wanting more.
- Share your opinion – How did the book make you feel? Did you like the author’s writing style? Would you recommend the book to others?
- Closing – Ask a rhetorical question, read a quote, end with a cliffhanger, or share what information is learned.
