The “S.E.N.S.E. at your Library” program (Sensory Experience Nurturing Special Education) is for children as well as young adults and adults with developmental disabilities. The toys are intended to be a playful experience for the senses and to help develop motor skills for children or those with development disabilities. The collection includes a variety of toys which meet the needs of visual, auditory, tactile, oral, and proprioceptive learners.
The S.E.N.S.E. program got its start as an idea from the Coshocton Department of Developmental Disabilities. The funding came from a grant for Coshocton and Knox counties through the Nisonger Center at OSU called the Remote Support and Assistive Technology Grant. One of the outcomes of the grant was to have a Tech and Toy Library in collaboration with the public library to meet the needs of the community.
The sensory toy kits are available to check out in the Children’s Room of the Coshocton County District Library for library cardholders. To apply for a free library card, a photo ID and proof of current address are required. For more information, please call 740-622-0956.
